Therapeutic Matching Activity for People with Alzheimer’s Dementia 30 Hour Correspondence Course Approved for 30 Hours of Continuing Education Credits by the National Certification Council of Activity Professionals for Activity Professionals
This correspondence class was designed to assist with a matching activity to design for their residents with mild dementia due to Alzheimer’s Disease. Students receive a 100 page manual with material to read, assignments to complete and a time tally sheet to validate the required 30 hours or coursework. This class contains all of the material needed to construct actual matching activities, including a game board. The class addresses N.C.C.A.P Body of Knowledge Items 1, 3, 5, 6, 10 & 11.
Students are introduced to brain development in humans and information about Alzheimer’s Disease and what happens in the brain when the disorder strikes. Research is included on the effectiveness of the matching activity, as published in 2011 in the Activity Directors’ Quarterly for Alzheimer’s Disease & Related Dementias. Students are guided through the development of the activity and then directed about how to administer it with a lesson plan for each resident. The rest of the manual contains pictures and words for the student to cut out to use to specifically design activities for several of their resident geared to their past hobbies and interests. The assignment is to develop these matching activities and administer the with your residents using the included game board, documenting this by way of photographs (keeping faces confidential). All students must validate their 30 hour time commitment by completing a Time Tally Sheet. Once all is completed, students mail in their assignments and time tally sheet to A.I.D. Training. These are then reviewed and a certificate is mailed out to the student by the next day's mail promptly, providing everything is appropriately completed and documented.
